Whew! Just finished this in time to make the deadline for a competition. This is “Sea of Textures” pastel on Canson sanded paper. I wanted to do something different for this competition, as well as just to take a break from doing people. Originally, I was just going to do it in shades of gray, but I love the combination of gray tones with bits of color. Also, I felt that it needed several colors to create the look of the inner shell with that glossy translucent quality.
A new work that is part of my “Contemplation” series.”Flight of Fancy”, 18.5 x 26 pastel on Canson sanded paper. This is the largest pastel painting that I have ever done, and it was quite a challenge.
Detail of work in progress. This is the largest and most ambitious pastel piece I have ever done. Lots more work to be done on this. My self doubt and struggle to render the image realistically has been slowing me down, but I keep working through it. It’s funny that when I plan and start each piece I feel that it will be relatively easy and not take me much time, but the reality is always different.
One oContemplation-old man-web_03.02.16f the most distinctive abilities that humans have is to contemplate, which has always fascinated me. Contemplation is to think profoundly and at length, meditate on, ponder, reflect on, consider, muse on or deliberate over. I am working on a new series of paintings that is inspired by contemplation in its many forms.
