This is the second sitting of the pastel painting, which was another four hours. Developed the baby’s face and started the mother’s hands. I am trying to capture a very realistic look, so lots of layering to build up the flesh tones. I am working from a snapshot of a friend’s wife and baby as inspiration, but developing the painting with a classical look. This was such a touching scene that it reminded me of the classic madonna paintings from the Renaissance.
I like to work only in natural light, which limits me being able to work only on weekends. But i just ordered a great new clamp on light with a sunlight bulb for my easel. This should allow me to work even at night.
