ARTIST PROFILE

Rita J. Romero is a noted San Francisco artist who has been painting and doing graphic design professionally for over 30 years. The ability to capture a likeness and unique personality of her subjects has made Rita's portrait work especially popular, and her fine art portraits hang in private collections across the United States.

"As a painter, I am continually fascinated by the properties of color, light, and shadow as they affect both the image and my own sense of beauty. I don't consider a painting successful until I have achieved my personal standard: to create a work of art that has a life of its own."

Mostly self-taught, R.J. began drawing and painting since she was a child growing up in Tucson, AZ. From the start she was influenced by the great master works of renowned portrait artist such as Rembrandt and Sargent. While she attended college in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Rita had the rare opportunity to study painting with prominent artists Clark Hulings and Roy Grinnell. Soon her landscapes and figurative paintings were accepted into two Santa Fe galleries and her work has been exhibited in art shows across the United States.

With an eye for detail and mastery of anatomy, R.J. Romero uses the traditional ‘old master’ techniques to produce vibrant images in oil paints, pastel, and other media. While the artist favors pastel and oil paint, R.J. also works in graphite, charcoal, acrylics, and digital media.

"Usually, the subject suggests the type of medium I choose to use. The properties and limitations of each medium challenge my creativity to interpret the subject how I envision it."

R.J. has no one favorite subject to paint, and resists falling into the same trap of other well known artists. "When an artist gets well known, the public tends to stereotype them for a particular style or subject matter. That is really limiting. I get excited by all types of subjects: landscapes, portraits, still life, etc. Each idea, each concept seems to want a life of its own. Each painting or design stands on its own merits, and I learn from the creative process of each piece."

" Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures."
Henry Ward Beecher
